Long-gestating project is shepherded by Italo TV producer Claudia Mori as a co-production between her Ciao Ragazzi! banner and pubcaster RAI's RAI Fiction. It will be shot as a theatrical feature and a two-part TV mini.
Principal photography on the untitled biopic will kick off Aug. 19 in the northeastern Italian city of Trieste, which is standing in for Berlin.
Other locations will include Princeton, N.J., where Einstein spent a long stint at the Institute for Advanced Study after he fled Nazi Germany.
Italian actress Maya Sansa ("Best of Youth") will play Einstein's first wife, Mileva Maric.
Pic, co-penned by Cavani with Massimo De Rita and Mario Falcone, will explore the personal life of Einstein, who died in 1955, at 76.
Cavani is among Italo helmers with an international standing she earned with films including drama "The Night Porter"; St. Francis of Assisi biopic "Francesco," which toplined Mickey Rourke; and Patricia Highsmith adaptation "Ripley's Game," produced in 2002.
