"They're both complicated family shows," said Showtime prexy Robert Greenblatt. "One is trying to hold a family together; the other is trying to put it back together. 'Weeds' is to indulgence as 'Californication' is to redemption.' "
Reflecting the shows' emphasis on sex and drugs, a sculpture-like mobile of faux massive lit joints hung from the ceiling while bikini-clad models lounged by the garden. But the hedonism stopped there; party behavior was in the realm of safe, corporate schmooze.
As for the shows' allure, "Weeds" star Kevin Nealon said, "It's always nice to watch people doing worse than you are. There were probably dysfunctional families in Sodom and Gomorrah."
