BBC online exec joins Lovefilm

Lavender developing features for service

LONDON -- Ben Lavender has been appointed group digital and product director at Lovefilm, Europe’s leading online DVD rental and movie download service.

Lavender joins from the BBC, where he pioneered and directed the launch of the BBC iPlayer, the online TV catch-up download service that launched last month. Whilst at the BBC, Ben was also project manager for "Celebdaq", an online celebrity stock market game.

At Lovefilm, he will develop and deliver new features across all territories including the U.K., Nordics and Germany. Lavender will also be responsible for the strategy and execution of the Lovefilm digital service.

"At a time when video shops are becoming obsolete, the future for the film industry, both for rental and download opportunities undoubtedly lies online," said Lavender. "Lovefilm has already shown its strength by transforming the traditional film rental business model, and will most definitely play a large role in its future advancement."

Lavender, who has also worked for commercial web Five and MTV Europe, will report to Lovefilm chief executive officer Simon Calder.
