Discovery expands Web presence

Makes plans to stream selected series

On the heels of its acquisition of environmental outfit TreeHugger.com, Discovery Communications is expanding its Web presence with plans to stream full-length episodes of selected series.

Discovery Channel's "Dirty Jobs," Animal Planet's "Meerkat Manor," and TLC's "LA Ink" will all be made available on their respective networks' websites the day after the shows' initial airdate. "Meerkat Manor" will bend this rule for its premiere, which will launch on the web today(Friday), a week before it appears on television. "L.A. Ink" and "Dirty Jobs" will both arrive on Aug. 8. Discovery plans to add more shows to its streaming menu later in the year.

The shows will use the Move Networks player to stream the new content. Move Networks recently competed successfully against Adobe's Flash technology to provide ABC's VOD programming.
