Deauville announces lineup

The Deauville Film Festival has announced the lineup for its 33rd edition, which takes place Aug. 31-Sept. 9 in the French seaside resort.

Fest, which focuses on American films, has programmed 64 features, including world premieres of Sidney Lumet's "Before the Devil Knows You're Dead" and Ben Affleck's "Gone, Baby, Gone."

Other titles receiving European or French premieres include Frank Oz's "Death at a Funeral," feature toon "Meet the Robinsons," Matthew Vaughn's "Stardust" and Mike Cahill's "King of California."

Talent contingents from several pics will take advantage of berths at the Venice Film Festival to also tubthump in Deauville; crossovers in the Premieres section include Andrew Dominik's "The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford," Tony Gilroy's "Michael Clayton" and Paul Haggis' "In the Valley of Elah."

With more than 200,000 attendees and substantial media coverage, Deauville serves as a launchpad to introduce major and niche pictures releasing in France through the fall and holiday season. Recent hits such as "Knocked Up" and "1408" will get Premiere screenings along with "The Bourne Ultimatum," which opens in the U.S. this Friday, and "The Heartbreak Kid," set for October release.

Filling out the Premieres section are horror pic "All The Boys Love Mandy Lane," Christopher Rowley's "Bonneville," Hal Hartley's "Fay Grim," Michael Davis' Clive Owen starrer "Shoot 'Em Up," Gregg Araki's "Smiley Face," penguin toon "Surf's Up," Sidney Lumet's 1972 pic "The Offence" and Patricia Riggen's "Under the Same Moon," with America Ferrera.

Fest will honor Michael Douglas, who stars in "King of California"; the thesp met wife Catherine Zeta-Jones at the fest. Also slated for tributes are Sigourney Weaver, the late actress-helmer Ida Lupino and Lumet. The book prize goes to Jay McInerney for his novel "The Good Life."

In the Competition section, which programs largely independent titles, entries competing for the grand prize and jury prize include Zoe Cassavetes' "Broken English," Sundance prize winner "Grace Is Gone," Jeffrey Blitz's "Rocket Science," Mitchell Lichtenstein's "Teeth" and Adrienne Shelly's "Waitress." Helmer Andre Techine heads the jury.

Docs screening include "Sicko," "Crazy Love" and "Nanking."

Theme of this year's event is "American Nights," with around-the-clock screenings of 60 classic Yank pics every day of the fest. Festival highlights just one French film -- a debut with a cash prize attached. This year's Michel D'Ornano prize for a first French film goes to Marc Fitoussi's "La Vie d'artiste," about three aspiring artists in Paris.
