LOS ANGELES -- Benjamin Goldhirsh, director of the Goldhirsh Foundation, and Andrew Hauptman, chairman of the Hauptman Family Foundation, jointly announced a $4 million donation to support the launch of City Year Los Angeles.

City Year is the national service organization, founded in 1988, that engages young adults in a year of full-time community service as tutors and mentors to schoolchildren in locations across the U.S.

This fall, City Year Los Angeles will launch with 75 corps members, each of whom will serve 1,700 hours, largely dedicated to underserved students in the Los Angeles Unified School District.

In its first year, the City Year corps members in Los Angeles will reach more than 1,000 students and engage more than 2,000 local community volunteers in community service. The corps size is slated to double within the next three years.

The Goldhirsh Foundation funded a challenge grant to start City Year Los Angeles with a $2 million gift , which was matched by a $2 million grant from the Hauptman Family Foundation.
