New project is based on the recently launched BBC skein "Dance X," a competition designed to find members of a musical troupe made up of people who can dance and sing. Unlike "Dancing With the Stars," new skein will feature an assortment of dance styles, from breakdancing to disco.
Focus of the show, however, will be on the rivalry between Tonioli and Inaba. Instead of serving as judges, they'll act as coach-choreographers on "Dance X." Tonioli is a coach on the Blighty edition of the skein.
After a week or so of auditions, Tonioli and Inaba will engage in a schoolyard pick, selecting members for their own dance teams and then putting them through their paces as they learn a new routine each week.
Viewers will choose between Inaba's and Tonioli's teams, with the losing coach having to eliminate a member of his or her troupe each week.
The dance numbers on the shows are expected to be big, brassy productions -- not unlike those in Disney's "High School Musical."
BBC version, which bowed a few weeks ago, was an instant hit. Most recent seg drew nearly 5 million viewers, walloping ITV's version of "The Singing Bee," which is called "Sing It Back."
ABC's take on "Dance X" will be produced by BBC Worldwide America, the company behind "Dancing With the Stars." Exec producing team for the new show is still being hammered out.
Alphabet has ordered at least six episodes of the skein. Instead of a results show, current plan is to air vote results at the start of each week's episode.
No final decision has been made on an airdate, but it's believed ABC is aiming to debut the show in January, in between seasons of "Dancing With the Stars."
