Gowers' appointment was announced Tuesday by the telecast's exec producer, Ken Ehrlich.
"Bruce is very talented and experienced at directing live events, and he always brings fresh ideas to the table," Ehrlich said.
Gowers also brings a unique perspective to directing the show: He has won two Emmys himself.
Besides directing the 57th Primetime Emmys, his credits include the American Music Awards, the MTV Movie Awards, the Billboard Music Awards, the People's Choice Awards and the Kids' Choice Awards.
His regular series directing jobs include "Celebrity Duets" and "So You Think You Can Dance," in addition to "Idol." Gowers cut his teeth directing late 1970s musicvideos, such as Queen's "Bohemian Rhapsody" and Rod Stewart's "Tonight's the Night."
The Emmycast airs Sunday, Sept. 16, on Fox. Nominations will be announced Thursday.
