While NBC held the upper hand ratings-wise on premiere night, the coming weeks will tell if the audience has a decided preference for one of the missing-lyrics shows over the other. And, as Fox and ABC have seen with their similarly themed unscripted wife-swapping and nanny projects, there is often room for two similar reality concepts -- so long as they don’t directly oppose each other.
According to same-day Nielsen nationals for Wednesday, the Wayne Brady-hosted “Lyrics” averaged a 3.4 rating/10 share in adults 18-49 and 8.28 million viewers overall from 9:30 to 10 p.m., winning its timeslot that included special competition from NBC’s “America’s Got Talent” (2.6/8, 7.56m).
This makes “Lyrics” the second strongest debuting show of the summer in 18-49, but it came in considerably lower than NBC’s “Singing Bee,” which had the advantage of bowing a night earlier (5.1/14 in 18-49, 13.31m). “Bee” also possessed a stronger lead-in and actually built on it, while “Lyrics” matched the demo score of the last half-hour of its lead-in from “So You Think You Can Dance.”
Fox was hoping to build more momentum for ”Lyrics,” from RDF USA and Brad Lachman Prods., by giving it an additional firstrun airing this week, sliding it in at 8:30 last night between a half-hour “Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader” at 8 and the “So You Think You Can Dance” results show at 9.
Elsewhere Wednesday, ABC’s
firstrun lineup of “The Next Best Thing” (2.1/7 in 18-49, 7.04m), “American Inventor” (2.0/6, 5.71m) and “Traveler” (1.2/3 in 18-49, 3.55m) were on the low end as they near their finales. While the drama “Traveler” clearly hasn’t worked, both “Next Best Thing” and “Inventor” have performed decently and would figure to be candidates to return down the road.
The 10 o’clock hour went to NBC’s special “Last Comic Standing” in demos (2.9/9 in 18-49, 6.94m), while a repeat of CBS drama “CSI: NY” (2.3/7 in 18-49, 8.71m) was the hour’s and night’s most-watched program overall.
