Although final numbers were not available Wednesday, Nielsen SoundScan reported that the two-CD “Hannah Montana 2/Meet Miley Cyrus” (Disney) had sold about 325,000 copies, topping Kelly Clarkson’s “My December” (RCA), which was about 10,000 shy of hitting 300K in sales.
Projections after the first day of sales had the two discs selling in the range of 325,000-350,000 each.
Still, the numbers for both artists are impressive.
The first “Hannah Montana” soundtrack debuted at No. 1 in October on sales of 281,000. “Meet Miley Cyrus” is the singer’s first disc under her name.
First-season “American Idol” champ Clarkson topped her career best, the debut week of “Breakaway,” which sold 250,000 and opened at No. 3. Clarkson’s debut album “Thankful” is her only No. 1.
Also establishing a career best this week was Ryan Adams, whose “Easy Tiger” (Lost Highway) opened at No. 7, selling 61,000. Four of Adams’ earlier solo albums have landed in the top 40 but this is his first to reach higher than No. 26.
The Beastie Boys’ instrumental album “The Mix-Up” (Capitol) sold 44,000 to take No. 15. Pearl Jam’s seven-disc live boxed set “Live at the Gorge” (Monkeywrench/Rhino) sold 19,000 to start at No. 36.
The Set List: While America was out celebrating the Fourth of July, Nielsen SoundScan was letting them know they haven't been celebrating with the purchases of recorded music in album form.
