Live Earth gets publicity push

Gore helps introduce '7 Point Pledge'

With little more than a week remaining until the July 7 Live Earth concert series, organizers Al Gore and Kevin Wall are continuing their massive publicity push. On Thursday, the two men signed the newly unveiled "7 Point Pledge," along with Alliance for Climate Protection CEO Cathy Zoi.

The document includes provisions for both planting trees and demanding that the signer's country of residence cut global warming pollution by 80%. Concertgoers will be encouraged to sign the pledge, as well.

Television cameras lined the back of the conference room in New York's Hearst Building, where Gore emphasized that they had chosen the site for its high environmental standards (the building has a Gold LEED rating, a rubric used by the US Green Building Council).

An unusual feature of the concert series' publicity campaign has been its grass-roots bent: Gore noted that of the 6,000 events involved in Live Earth, many were house parties organized out of private homes. He encouraged "others within the sound of my voice" to host further get-togethers, and offered information via the affiliated companies' websites.

On the Sierra Club's website, that information includes discussion questions, printable postcards to congress, a "sign-in sheet" with a request that it be mailed to the Sierra Club, and model releases for partygoers, should Live Earth use photos of the house party for further promotions.

The project enjoys support from an eclectic group of organizations, from the Sierra Club and MoveOn.org to Philips and PepsiCo.
