'Fog' rolls in to Newmarket

Chellas to adapt Richmond's novel

Newmarket Films has acquired the film rights to Michelle Richmond's novel "The Year of Fog" and tapped Semi Chellas to adapt.

Newmarket will produce and fully finance the bigscreen project. P. Jennifer Dana and Andrew Lauren of Andrew Lauren Prods. and Newmarket's Aaron Ryder will serve as producers, with Newmarket principals Chris J. Ball and William Tyrer exec producing.

San Francisco-set novel follows a young woman whose fiance's child vanishes when she momentarily looks away to take a photograph. The couple then struggles through blame, loss and grief while constructing their own ideas about the girl's fate.

Chellas penned and produced Canadian TV series "The Eleventh Hour" and wrote "The Life Before This," a dramatic thriller starring Catherine O'Hara, Stephen Rea and Sarah Polley.

Newmarket recently acquired  Matt O'Neil spec script "Bull Rush," with the company set to fully finance the feature and produce. It co-produced "Prom Night" with Original Films, with that film going out next April, and it will release writer-director John August's "The Nines" in late summer.

Andrew Lauren Prods. is a New York-based indie with credits that include "The Squid and the Whale."
