With a local assist from the China Interactive Media Group, event will focus on a screening of breakdancing doc "Planet B-Boy."
Idea for Tribeca 798 (named for an artist-friendly district of Beijing) is to offer the Chinese capital a concentrated dose of the American indie scene by way of downtown Gotham. It will feature an opening-night reception and block party -- both basic features of the domestic film landscape but decidedly exotic in a country whose government strictly limits American film imports.
Jon Patricof, chief operating officer of Tribeca Enterprises, said the event reps an "opportunity to help create a platform for independent film in China."
Noting that 18 features and shorts from Chinese filmmakers have screened in the Tribeca Film Festival's six years, fest artistic director Peter Scarlet said, "We're happy to begin this new international collaboration."
