Congress tipped its hat Monday to the life and work of Jack Valenti, whose commitment to public service is still being hailed as a model.

The House of Representatives approved a resolution saluting Valenti for his military and political service as well as his advocacy for Hollywood and later for reducing poverty and disease around the world.

Praising Valenti for his tour of duty flying B-25s during WWII and then his stint as a senior aide to Lyndon B. Johnson, Rep. Diane Watson (D-Calif.), author of the resolution, said, "After his tenure at the Motion Picture Assn., Jack joined the fight against AIDS, TB and malaria and committed himself to increasing the quality of life of those suffering from the devastating effects of disease and poverty around the globe.

"He served," she continued, "as a tireless spokesman for disease-devastated communities across the globe, navigating the halls of Congress with statesmanlike agility to ensure that the United States increased its funding to the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria and other such programs."
