Pic's produced in association with National Lampoon, Burnt Orange Prods. and the U. of Texas Film Institute. Movie, which will be retitled "National Lampoon's Homo Erectus," was produced by Brad Wyman ("Monster") and Carolyn Pfeiffer ("The Quiet"), with Tom Schatz exec producing.
Rifkin wrote, directed and stars in "Homo Erectus," centered on a philosophical caveman with an unrequited love interest who's never impressed with his inventions, such as the toilet, the spoon and pants. Ali Larter, Hayes MacArthur, David Carradine, Gary Busey and Talia Shire also star.
Rifkin penned "Underdog" and helmed "The Chase," "Detroit Rock City" and "Dark Backward." His film "Look" recently won the grand jury prize at CineVegas.
National Lampoon purchased "Electric Apricot" earlier this year and is planning to release its first inhouse feature production, "National Lampoon's Bagboy," starring Brooke Shields, Dennis Farina and Larry Miller, as it moves into producing its own fully financed comedies. Company's been involved in more than two dozen pics, starting with 1978's "Animal House," usually through licensing.
