The Greek helmer unveiled the project in Cologne on Monday, where he spoke at a panel at German funding org Filmstiftung North Rhine-Westphalia's an-nual Intl. Film Congress. The funding org has awarded the project around $1 million.
Filmstiftung in June allocated some $5 million for the production and pre-production of several projects. The largest amount, $1.5 million, was awarded to British-German-Austrian co-production "Desert Flower," directed by Sherry Hormann. Pic is based on the best-selling book by Waris Dirie, who grew up as an African nomad girl to later become a model.
Helmer Sandra Nettelbeck, whose "Mostly Martha" is presently being remade by Hollywood, has received support for "Helen," which will feature Gillian Anderson and Jeffrey Dean Morgan.
Nick Stringer received coin for his documentary "The Turtle's Song."
Filmstiftung also supported the directorial debut of French writer Michel Houellebecq, an adaptation of his novel "The Possibility of an Island."
Separately, Filmstiftung announced that it has spent euros $1.3 million this year on support of screenplay development. Ten producers have so far benefited from the new type of support which was introduced only recently.
"It gives producers the freedom to develop themes independently from third parties," said Tom Spiess, chairman of the federation of producers in NRW.
