Pic will be based on the first three books in the projected nine-volume series; four are available in 15 languages and have sold more than half a million copies. Story weaves the tale of orphaned sisters Sabrina and Daphne Grimm, descendants of the Brothers Grimm, on a quest to find their parents.
"We had a lot of people who were interested, but it didn't seem like there was anybody who could actually get it made," said Buckley of the deal. "And I didn't want to hand the books over and let them sit. Also, I wanted to find people who could make a movie that a parent could enjoy as well as a kid."
"People all over the world have grown up with Grimm's Fairy Tales, and we see this as a huge family adventure franchise," said VP of entertainment Danica Radovanov. Creative executive Alexander F. Young brought the project to the company.
Josephson Entertainment is in pre-production with "They Came From Upstairs." Barry Josephson will produce Disney's upcoming "Enchanted," the Kevin Lima-helmed live-action meets animation pic starring Patrick Dempsey, Amy Adams and Susan Sarandon.
Upcoming New Regency releases include the Doug Liman-helmed "Jumper," "Alvin and the Chipmunks," and "Starship Dave" with Eddie Murphy.
