The prize, called Golden Lion for the 75th, will be given Sept. 8 during the closing ceremony of the event's 64th edition, which will run Aug. 29-Sept. 8.
Due to WWII and the 1968 student protests it was not held every year since its inception in 1932, which is why the upcoming edition is the 64th.
Bertolucci's long history with Venice dates back to 1962 when his debut feature "La commare secca" (The Grim Reaper) became the first of many of his works to launch from the Lido, most recently "The Dreamers," in 2003. He also presided over the Venice jury in 1983.
"His films are at the same time declarations of love to cinema and also a manifesto of future utopias that find ways to regenerate themselves from past ones," said Venice artistic topper Marco Mueller, praising Bertolucci's work. "The festival therefore needed Bertolucci to re-read its history and reflect upon its future."
Two Bertolucci pics, a freshly restored print of his acclaimed 1970 drama "The Spider's Stratagem" (La strategia del ragno), and a rarely seen 1968 docu, "La via del petrolio," about the history and contemporary importance of petroleum, will unspool as part of the Lido's tribute.
Venice's regular Golden Lion for career achievement, as previously announced, will go to Tim Burton.
