Japanese vidgame giant sold 338,000 Wii's, down just a bit from April, according to data from the NPD Group. Microsoft also saw a modest drop in sales for its Xbox 360, from 174,000 to 155,000. Sony's Playstation 3 remained a distant third amongst the next generation consoles, staying even at 82,000 units sold.
Continued weakness for the PS3 and resulting losses in Sony's videogame division has the electronics and media conglom considering options to boost sales. Sony CEO Howard Stringer told the Financial Times Thursday that the company is trying to "refine" how much it can cut the cost of the pricey console, which is over $100 more than an Xbox 360 and $350 more than a Wii.
Its Playstation 2, however, remained in the mix, selling a very healthy 188,000 units, down just slightly from April. Sony's handheld PSP also did decently, selling 221,000 units. But that's well behind Nintendo's competing DS, which moved 423,000.
Nintendo's "Pokemon Diamond" remained the no. 1 best selling game with 331,200 units sold. Its companion "Pokemon Pearl" was no. 4 with 238,000. Nintendo also took no. 2 with "Mario Party 8" for the Wii, which sold 314,400 units, while its "Wii Play" was no. 5, moving 227,400. Only non-Nintendo game in the top 5 was Activision's adaptation of "Spider-Man 3" for the Playstation 2, which sold 248,700 games and swung to no. 3.
Overall, videogame industry sales were up 49% from the same month a year ago.
