Frank Davis and the studio reached the settlement Wednesday on the second day of the trial in federal court in Los Angeles. Terms of the settlement were not disclosed.
But the federal government's suit against the studio, which Davis had joined, will continue in an attempt by the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission to impose court-enforced monitoring and oversight of hiring and firing policies.
In its first racial discrimination suit against a Hollywood studio, the EEOC has alleged that U fired Davis without cause because he's African American and because he was held to a higher standard than the white assistant director who replaced him.
Universal has denied the charges and asserted that Davis was fired for performance reasons. Lawyers for the studio said in court that members of the crew and production team had complained about his performance.
Pic's helmer John Singleton testified Tuesday that he did not oppose the firing of Davis at the time because he wanted to finish the film. Singleton had worked with Davis previously on "Baby Boy" and a Burger King commercial.
