In January, the studio won a bidding war for rights to a New York Times article by Warren St. John, beating out Columbia, DreamWorks and Disney by ponying up $2 million against $3 million for the project. UTA, which also reps Berloff, brokered the original deal, which included rights to St. John's book based on the story, and $500,000 to build a soccer field for the kids (Daily Variety, Jan. 25).
Stuber/Parent's Scott Stuber and Mary Parent are producing with Kennedy/Marshall's Kathleen Kennedy and Frank Marshall. Tom Lassally is exec producer.
Story revolves around Luma Mufleh, a Jordan-born woman who coaches soccer teams in Clarkston, Ga., where refugee families from the around the world have settled. The kids, many extremely poor, find success and camaraderie under the coach's tutelage.
