Cinema Expo fetes Marinca

Actress starred in Cannes winner

LONDON -- Cinema Expo International will fete Anamaria Marinca with its inaugural excellence in acting award, a prize instituted to celebrate a breakthrough performer in European cinema.

The Romanian-born British actress recently turned heads at Cannes for her perf in Cristian Mungiu's gritty Palme d'Or winner "4 Months, 3 weeks, 2 Days."

"Anamaria's career includes extensive credits in theater as well as television, and if her first film performance is anything to go by, I am sure we will see plenty more of her on the big screen," enthused Tommaso Campione, CEI show director.

In 2005, Marinca bagged a best actress BAFTA TV prize for her role in celebrated prostitution trafficking drama "Sex Traffic."

Marinca, who will next be seen in Francis Ford Coppola's WWII romance "Youth Without Youth," will collect her Cinema Expo kudos in person on Thursday, June 28 at the closing night festivities of Cinema Expo.

In addition to product reels from the studios, a trade show and a full complement of seminars, which this year focus primarily on the digital cinema revolution and developments in 3D cinema, Cinema Expo 2007 will offer European industryites screenings of eight pics not yet released in the region.

Screening are "Transformers" (Paramount Pictures International), "Surfs Up" (Sony Pictures Releasing International), "Die Hard 4.0" (Twentieth Century Fox International), "No Reservations" (Warner Bros. Pictures), "Ratatouille" (BVI), "Hairspray" (New Line International), "I Now Pronounce You Chucky and Larry" (Universal Pictures International) and the hot ticket, a first-come-first-served Imax 3D screening of "Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix" at Amsterdam's Pathe Imax cinema on June 28.

Other previously announced awards to be dished out at the closing night banquet go to international distributor of the year Christian Grass, and to Kitag Cinema Group's Philippe Taschler, who will pick up the international exhibitor of the year kudos.

In terms of talent attending the show, Campione promises "a big hitter" associated with one of the screening movies. In recent editions, Sacha Baron Cohen, Ridley Scott and Nick Park and showed up in Amsterdam to tub thump for their projects.

Cinema Expo runs June 25-29 at Amsterdam's RAI center.
