'Pirates' is widest-ever release in Australia

Pic opens on 606 screens Down Under

SYDNEY -- "Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End" released on 606 screens Thursday has become the widest-ever release Down Under, 46 screens ahead of previous record-holder, Sony's "The Da Vinci Code" which opened May 2006 on 560 screens.

The wide roll-out generated a A$20,000 ($16,400) per-screen average and $9.8 million haul, the highest "Pirates" opening in Oz but not enough to nab "World's End" a spot among the top-five opening weekends Down Under.

Pic comes in at six, behind "The Lord of the Rings: Two Towers," "Star Wars Episode III," "Shrek 2," "The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King" and "Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire."
