The annual TV program sales bazaar, now in its 15th year, focuses on Eastern and Central European programming.
Garin, a well-known American exec, heads one of the powerhouse station groups in the region, which played a major role in spearheading commercial broadcasting there during the past 15 years.
As part of Discop's 15th anni celebrations, a gala dinner is being organized for veteran attendees on June 20, the first night of the four-day confab.
"The international TV content biz in Central and Eastern Europe has grown from a few hundred thousand dollars during the Soviet era to several hundred millions of dollars in the 15 years since Discop," said Patrick Jucaud, the trade show's founder and general manager.
Some 2,000 participants are expected in the Hungarian capital (about 12,000 from around the globe show up for the global markets in Cannes, Mip and Mipcom).
Garin, whose background ranges from Lorimar TV to ING Barings investment bank, was appointed chief exec of CME in February 2004. He also lent his expertise to various national and European boards, including Cablecom, the largest Swiss MSO, and Canal Plus Nordic, a pay TV platform in Scandinavia.
Founded in 1991, Discop is the only content and format mart devoted specifically to the region. NATPE, which runs its annual U.S.-focused trade show each year in January, acquired the Budapest event in 2005, and since then, Hollywood participation has increased.
