The rap-rock act also established a new record for most digital copies sold in a week -- 84,000 -- topping the previous record holder, Justin Timberlake's "FutureSex/LoveSounds," by nearly 20,000 units.
Band's last disc, 2003's "Meteora," sold 810,000 in its first week.
The third album from R&B singer Tank, "Sex, Love & Pain" (Blackstreet/Universal Motown), came in at No. 2, selling 103,000 copies. It is the first time he has cracked the top 10.
Wilco posted their second top-10 album as "Sky Blue Sky" (Nonesuch) sold 87,000 to open at No. 4.
Gretchen Wilson's third album, "One for the Boys" (Columbia Nashville), sold 73,000 copies. While all of her albums have debuted in the top 10, it is the first time she has sold fewer than 200,000 copies in the sales sesh.
Megadeth's first album for Roadrunner, "United Abominations," became the metal band's first top 10 album in 13 years. Disc sold 54,000 and came in at No. 8.
Warner Music Group, which had four albums in the top 10 (Linkin Park, Wilco, Michael Buble and Megadeth), saw its market share for the week skyrocket to 27.2%, right behind Universal. Company's current market share of 19.8% is the highest it has been in five years.
Other debuts repped career highs in sales for Rufus Wainwright -- "Release the Stars" (Geffen) sold 24,000 (No. 23) -- and Pink Martini -- "Hey Eugene!" (Heinz) sold 19,000 (No. 30).
