Orange's new film company has announced its first movie co-production project, sinking e2 million ($2.7 million) into French YouTube sensation "Les Lascars," for a 50% stake alongside Millimages.

Studio 37 launched last fall, promising to pump coin into French cinema. More projects are in the works.

Under the terms of this first deal, Gallic toon house Millimages will hold all distribution rights to hip-hop "Les Lascars," produced by Philippe Gompel and Roch Lener, with film subsid Bac handling French and international distribution.

Millimages and France Telecom plan to jointly develop cross-platform content to promote the suburban-set "Les Lascars" on new media platforms such as mobile phones.

Show, which aired as "Round Da Way" on MTV, is already an Internet phenom, with pirated versions available on sites such as You Tube and Dailymotion.

"There is something about 'Les Lascars' that could become cult," said Frederique Dumas, head of Studio 37 said Monday. "It had a very funny sense of humor that appeals to everyone."

Lener described the deal with Studio 37 as "a natural partnership more than a financial arrangement."

"People in media often talk about multi-platform projects but 'Les Lascars' really is just that."

Millimages has previously co-produced 50-50 with other Gallic indie production companies, on films such as "Piccolo and Saxo," and the black and white toon "Renaissance."
