Venevision goes mobile

Distrib unit to produce content

Miami-based Spanish-language distrib Venevision Intl., owned by Venezuelan media conglom Grupo Cisneros, is jumping into the mobile content biz, creating custom-made mini-telenovelas for fans of the genre.

The Latino sudsers-on-the-go kick off with 20 2½ minute episodes of "Querido Profe" (Dear Professor), starring Hector Soberon, Ana Silvetti and Liannet Borrego. Set in an exclusive art school for girls, sudser will be produced entirely in Miami. Jose Useche directs the mobisodes based on scripts by Francisco Arrieta and Gaby Albarran.

Venevision Intl. mobile telenovela "Mi Ultimo Deseo" (My Last Wish), will offer seven 7½-minute episodes and will be produced in Mexico.

Both will be available for online downloads.

Distrib launched Venemobile in March. New business unit provides film clips, photographs and ringtones from the Cisneros Group's music, film and TV divisions for the U.S. Hispanic wireless phone market.

Venemobile and sister company Latcel will be distributing the mobile telenovelas through their various pacts with carriers in the U.S., Latin America and elsewhere around the world.

Venevision Intl. distributes Spanish-language soap operas, musicals and talkshows from the programming catalog of the Cisneros Group.

Company joins a growing legion of companies that are directing more programming content at mobiles.

In the latest deal unveiled, ABC announced a pact with Sprint to allow clientele access to full episodes of news and entertainment programming from ABC Entertainment, ABC News and Disney Channel on their mobile phones, either on demand or via streaming channels.

ABC recently launched mini-episodes of "Vidas de Fuego" (Lives of Fire), the telenovela viewed by Betty's father on "Ugly Betty," on its Web site and on Verizon Wireless.

NBC Universal Spanish-language broadcaster Telemundo and producing partner Sony Pictures Television Intl. teamed with ATT to distribute highlights, ringtones and other custom-created mobile content sourced from their telenovela "Zorro: La Espada y la Rosa."
