"This is not a theme park," commented George Wade, MGM's senior VP and managing director for location-based entertainment. "Our aim was to create a great place for people to hang out, with great tenants and great entertainment."
Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Studios Inc. signed the licensing agreement earlier this year with Hong Kong based Tengxun Entertainment and Management Ltd., which will project manage, and Shanghai Tianhong Real Estate Investment Co. Ltd., which is developing and constructing the 200,000-square-foot leisure center as part of a larger construction project in the Changfeng area of Shanghai.
MGM is the project's licensor and creative collaborator and will neither invest in nor operate the center, though the MGM logo and images from their film library of around 4,000 titles will be displayed "prominently" throughout the complex, according to George Wade. He went on: "This is our first international leisure center. It is significant that we picked Shanghai. Moving into the China market is very important to us, and this is the first step."
