Hong Kong jails pirate

Chan gets three months

CANNES -- A Hong Kong man has been jailed for three months for pirating movies online. Chan Nai-ming Friday lost an appeal against conviction. Judges said that by uploading movies to the BitTorrent peer-to-peer service for others to download he was guilty of offenses under Hong Kong's copyright ordinances.

Chan previously served 24 days of his sentence, but was released pending appeal.

Customs and Excise department said, "The ruling will generate a strong deterrent effect on Internet piracy activities."
