New shipments of its next-gen Wii console were snatched up, with North American consumers buying 360,000 units. Microsoft's Xbox 360 moved 174,000 units in the same period, followed by Sony's PlayStation 2 (194,000) and PlayStation 3 (82,000).
Among handhelds, Nintendo's DS sold 471,000 units vs. 183,000 for Sony's PlayStation Portable.
The top four games sold during the month were all Nintendo titles, powered mainly by "Pokemon," proving that the franchise is still a cash cow.
"Pokemon Diamond," for the DS, sold more than 1 million units, while the "Pearl" version of the handheld game sold 712,000. Those were followed by "Super Paper Mario" for the Wii (352,000) and "Wii Play" (249,000). First three titles were released in April.
Overall, "Pokemon" helped boost units of portable game software sold by 61% over the previous month.
Activision led the rest of the pack in software sales. Its "Guitar Hero 2," for the Xbox 360 and PS2, was the top-selling non-Nintendo title, moving 197,000 and 142,000 units, respectively.
Other top sellers were Activision's "Spider-Man 3" for the Xbox 360 (117,000) and PS2 (105,000). Sony's "God of War II" (101,000), exclusive for the PS2, and "MLB '07: The Show" (79,000), on the same console, rounded out the list.
