At Wednesday's press conference Wong — famous for his dark glasses and elusive habits — was erudite, direct and almost bouncy.
"We started the film right after Cannes last year (when he was jury president) and thought it would be good to come back as opening film, because mostly my films come here at the last minute," Wong said.
His previous movie "2046" was so late that fest had to alter the competition screening schedule. He admitted that he was still in L.A. until Monday putting final touches to pic.
"And I wanted it in competition because it is a way of highlighting (Jude Law's and Norah Jones') performances," he said.
Songbird Jones, famously nervous about making her movie debut, said she has no plans to expand her acting career.
"I have a long tour this summer," she said.
While Law said he found Wong's sometimes confusing and improvisational style of directing, "very free" and "a learning experience," Jones joked: "I don't know any different."
