Bates, who won an Oscar in 1990 for "Misery," began her career as a legit regular -- with stage credits including "'night, Mother" on Broadway in 1983 and McNally's "Frankie and Johnny in the Claire de Lune" Off Broadway in 1987 -- but she hasn't been seen much on the boards since then.
McNally's play "Some Men," which had a subsequent run this season Off Broadway, bowed at PTC last year. "Devotion," for which plot details remain sketchy, reps another McNally show to get a bump in profile from the stage return of a formidable leading lady: His play "Deuce," which opened on the Rialto May 6, stars Angela Lansbury.
PTC season also includes a new work from thesp-clown Bill Irwin ("Fool Moon," "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?") called "The Happiness Lecture," in which Irwin muses on dreams, puppets and modern life. "Lecture" gets a springtime slot after Wendy Wasserstein's "Third," which rounds out the PTC sked along with one other show yet to be announced.
