The inaugural H&M High Line Festival kicks off Wednesday and will take place in venues near New York City's High Line -- the 1930s elevated rail structure that will open to the public in 2008, running through the Meatpacking District, West Chelsea and Clinton/Hell's Kitchen.

David Bowie, a co-founder of the Festival, will curate the inaugural fest, which will feature musical performances, film, comedy and visual art.

In subsequent years, Bowie will help fest's producers David Binder and Josh Wood select an artistic icon to serve as event's curator.

Arcade Fire, the Secret Machines, and a triple bill of Daniel Johnston, Bang on a Can All Stars and the Legendary Stardust Cowboy are among the artists who will perform during fest.

Ten-day fest also will include an exhibition of photographer Claude Cahun's work, a public art event by artist Laurie McLeod; and a retrospective of David Bowie's favorite Spanish language films.

A portion of fest's proceeds will go to benefit Friends of the High Line, org currently working with the City of New York to transform the 1930s rail structure into a park.

California Company Town
In the spare, structurally rigorous and politically dubious "California Company Town," filmmaker Lee Anne Schmitt observes the life and (mostly) death of several of the Golden State's company-owned towns with cool detachment and aesthetic miserabilism.
