HBO scores sportswriting trilogy

Mangold set to direct miniseries

HBO Films will turn a Pulitzer Prize-winning book trilogy by Richard Ford into "The Sportswriter," a six-hour miniseries to be directed by James Mangold.

Mark Bomback will write all six hourlong episodes and use all three titles in the trilogy: "The Sportswriter," the Pulitzer-winning "Independence Day" and "The Lay of the Land."

Mangold and Cathy Konrad will exec produce through their Tree Line banner.

Mini will cover 30 years in the life of New Jersey sportswriter Frank Bascombe, starting as his comfortable existence is shattered by the death of his oldest son. It focuses on the evolution of an ordinary guy in a time span from Vietnam to 9/11.

Mangold ("Walk the Line") and Konrad just finished the Christian Bale-Russell Crowe starrer "3:10 to Yuma."Bomback, who also scripted the Hugh Jackman-Ewan McGregor drama "The Tourist," wrote the upcoming "Live Free or Die Hard."

Mangold's repped by WMA and Management 360, Bomback by Endeavor and the Firm.
