Born in Calgary, Canada, he moved to Los Angeles with his family as a child. He joined the Navy and then graduated form UCLA, then became a professional football player and stuntman.
He often played gruff bad guy roles in films including "Chinatown," "Harper," "Star Trek," "Any Which Way But Loose," and "The Getaway."
On TV, he appeared on shows including "The Rockford Files," "Kojak," "Little House on the Prairie" and "Fantasy Island," as well as recurring roles on "Mannix" and "Gunsmoke."
He is survived by his wife, actress Marina Petrowa; three sons; a brother, seven granddaughters and one great-great granddaughter.
