Beeban Kidron will direct the film, which begins lensing in fall.
Pic will be produced by Tim Bevan and Eric Fellner. Lee Hall wrote the script based on "Hippie Hippie Shake: The Dreams, the Trips, the Trials, the Love-ins, the Screw Ups: The Sixties," a memoir by Richard Neville (to be played by Murphy). The film will use a famous obscenity trial involving the Australian satirical magazine Oz as a metaphor for a journey through the swinging '60s in London.
The mag was transplanted to London, where Neville and his cohorts became the defendants in the longest obscenity trial in English legal historyafter a sexually explicit issue aroused the ire of the Obscene Publications Squad. The trial ended with the defendants sentenced to hard labor, but an appeal absolved them, with the provision that they stop publishing the magazine.
Kidron last directed the sequel "Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason" for U and Working Title.
Murphy's repped by UTA, Kidron and Miller by Endeavor and Minghella by CAA.
