Traffic stopped outside the AMC Loews Theater on Broadway as pic's star Keri Russell, and her baby bump, took to the red carpet. Crowds also gathered during the film's after-party at Madison Square Park's the Shake Shack, which was transformed into Lulu's Pies in homage to the film.
Despite the preem's playful after-party venue, there was a tragic aspect to the entire event.
Fox Searchlight picked up the "Waitress" for $5 million at Sundance less than three months after the death of Adrienne Shelly, the film's writer, director and co-star.
In-between milkshakes and hamburgers, Fox Searchlight's Nancy Utley spoke of the bittersweet experience of promoting the film without Shelly.
"What Adrienne's family has told us is that the biggest dream for her would be for people to see her work, so if we can get people in to see it, it feels like we are doing something positive for her legacy," she said.
