'Young Frankenstein' set for Seattle

Musical to run tryout on Aug. 4 - Sept. 1

New Mel Brooks tuner "Young Frankenstein" will have its pre-Broadway tryout in Seattle this summer, running Aug. 4-Sept. 1 at the Paramount Theater.

Speculation on the show, carefully watched by Rialto denizens as a potential follow-up hit to previous Brooks musical "The Producers," posited that another candidate for the "Frankenstein" tryout was Chicago, which was pre-Broadway host to the "Producers."

Instead, the producers of "Frankenstein," Brooks and Robert F.X. Sillerman, have opted for Seattle, the city where "Hairspray" and "The Wedding Singer" tried out at the Fifth Avenue Theater.

"Young Frankenstein," based on Brook's 1974 pic, reteams composer-lyricist-scribe Brooks with co-book writer Thomas Meehan and helmer-choreographer Susan Stroman.

Design team also is composed of "Producers" vets, including Robin Wagner (set), William Ivey Long (costumes) and Peter Kaczorowski (lights).

Casting has not been set, although Megan Mullally, Sutton Foster and Shuler Hensley are said to be in negotiations to join the cast.

Rialto incarnation of "The Producers" closed Sunday after a six-year-run that yielded a dozen Tonys.

"Frankenstein" recently stirred up gossip when producers and creatives decided they want the show to play not in the St. James Theater, former home of "The Producers," but instead in the Hilton, currently housing "The Pirate Queen." "Frankenstein" aims to open in Gotham on Halloween.
