Morena Films likes 'The Possibility'

Houellebecq to direct, adapt own novel

MADRID -- Madrid-based production-house Morena Films, one of Spain's most internationally driven companies, has boarded "The Possibility of an Island," written and to be directed by French novelist Michel Houellebecq ("The Elementary Particles," "Platform").

Houellebecq's own hit novel of the same title was published last fall and won France's Interallie literary prize. Futuristic pic stars Benoit Magimel ("Fair Play," "Selon Charlie") who lives in a futuristic eco-damaged dystopia of cults and cloning.

Morena has taken 20% co-production equity on "Possibility," which rolls from Monday on the Spanish Canary Island of Lanzarote. France's Mandarin Films is pic's lede producer with 70% equity. Belgium's AT Production has taken 10%.

The 6.8 million euros ($9.1 million) film moves on to Spain's Ciudad de la Luz studios at Alicante in mid-May.

Mandarin Films previously worked with Morena producer Juan Gordon on Maria Ripoll's "Man With Rain in his Shoes."
