Net announced Thursday that the raunchy performer will preside over the ceremony, which will air live for the first time in its history.
Silverman hosted the Film Independent Spirit Awards in February.
Mark Burnett is producing the MTV special this year; he has already made several additions to the show's traditional format, including a Yahoo site that seeks to increase both online and network traffic.
MTV looks to figures who are popular with younger auds to fill its host slot; Jessica Alba hosted last year.
Net will also use bits from the comedian-thesp in trailers and teaser material.
