Bacon will play Lt. Col. Michael Strobl, an officer who accompanies the body of fallen U.S. soldier Chance Phelps as it is returned home from Iraq for a burial in Wyoming.
Strobl is penning the script with Katz, adapting it from Strobl's short story of the same name.
Project is set to go into production this summer. Movie will air on the net, likely in 2008.
Bacon, star of "Mystic River" and Fox's upcoming "Death Sentence," is a rare presence on the small screen. He most recently directed an episode of Kyra Sedgwick's TNT hit "The Closer."
Katz, who produced "In the Bedroom" and "Marie Antoinette" and exec produced HBO's "The Laramie Project" recently signed a first-look production deal with Focus Features. This pic will mark his directorial debut.
"Chance" is exec produced by Brad Krevoy, Cathy Wischner-Sola and Katz; Lori Keith Douglas produces. Pic was originally slated to go into production last summer.
