Tribeca goes wireless

Festival content available on Verizon phones

Following Sundance Film Festival's lead, Tribeca Film Festival will go wireless this year and offer trailers, shorts and full-length features.

For the first time ever, fest content will be available on mobile phones via Verizon Wireless as well as on broadband Internet and FiOS.

Fest wireless content will include three current festival full-length feature films, three short films, 49 movie trailers and three short films created exclusively for mobile users.

Film festivals have tried going wireless before.

In 2001, Sundance Film Festival experimented with wireless but realized that the technology was not yet widely available. In 2006 the fest launched the Film Festival Global Short Film Project to showcase and extend the reach of the independent short film genre to mobile users worldwide.

The Tribeca Film Festival also is doing private screenings using wireless barcode tickets that will be sent straight to attendees' mobile phones and scanned upon entering the theater. In addition, fest is doing text-to-screen mobile movie reviews available throughout Gotham.
