Film is first documentary to win grand jury feature

Helmer Rob Stewart's underwater Canuck doc "Sharkwater" garnered top prizes at the 12th annual Gen Art Film Festival in Gotham this week.

Pic is the first documentary to win fest's grand jury feature film nod and audience award.

Stewart received $10,000 as part of the award. Pic documents Stewart's journey to protect sharks from extinction.

Phillip Van's "High Maintenance," meantime, was named fest's top short pic. Helmer took home $5,000 for the win.

Fest's Stargazer award, honoring breakout talent, went to "Chalk" star Troy Schremmer.
