Columbus struck by 'Lightning'

Fox 2000 project is first in Riordan series

Chris Columbus is lining up to direct and produce author Rick Riordan's fantasy tome "The Lightning Thief" for Fox 2000 through his 1492 Pictures banner.

Maverick's Greg Mooradian and Karen Rosenfelt also are producing.

"Lightning Thief" is the first book in Riordan's series "Percy Jackson and the Olympians."

Storyline revolves around a young boy who discovers that he's the descendant of a Greek god, and his quest to quell a battle between mythological deities.

The project brings Columbus back to his root family/fantasy genre that includes "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone," "Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets," "Mrs. Doubtfire" and "Home Alone," among others.

Columbus' producing credits "Night at the Museum" "Christmas With the Kranks" and "Rent."

"Lightning Thief" has sold more than 500,000 copies in the U.S. and was a New York Times bestseller.
