Grant making it 'Happen'

Dance film to be based in burlesque world

The Mayhem Project has tapped helmer Darren Grant ("Diary of a Mad Black Woman") to direct dance movie "Make It Happen," based in the world of burlesque.

Mayhem topper Anthony Mosawi and production prexy Brad Luff are producing. The film is slated for a July start date and will shoot in Louisiana and Chicago.

Mayhem is financing the movie. Mosawi said "Make It Happen" generated strong foreign presales via the Weinstein Co. at the Berlin Film Market earlier this year.

Script by Duane Adler ("Save the Last Dance," "Step Up") revolves around a young woman from a small town who moves to Chicago with dreams of becoming a professional dancer and falls into performing at a burlesque bar.

Besides helming "Diary of a Mad Black Woman" for Lionsgate, Grant has directed more than 130 musicvideos and commercials and worked with Jewel, Destiny's Child and Jay-Z.

Mosawi and Luff launched Mayhem two years ago with the aim of producing two to three features per year, targeting projects based on established franchises such as comicbooks and vidgames, with budgets ranging from $10 million-$30 million.
