Duo dives into 'Sweetwater'

Dreyfuss, Simmons set for basketball film

Richard Dreyfuss and Henry Simmons will star in Sunset Pictures' basketball drama "Sweetwater," the story of Nat "Sweetwater" Clifton, the first African-American basketball player to play for an NBA team.

Sunset Pictures partner Dahlia Waingort is producing with Hand Picked Films' Michel Shane and Anthony Romano ("I, Robot," "Catch Me if You Can"). Peter Wooster exec produces.

Pic was written and will be directed by Martin Guigui ("Changing Hearts," "Swing").

Simmons ("Madea's Family Reunion") will play the title role while Dreyfuss will portray Abe Saperstein, the owner and founder of the Harlem Globetrotters. Saperstein coached Clifton and sold his contract to the NBA's New York Knicks in 1950.

Rapper-thesp Romeo ("Honey") will play the young Clifton. He's the son of rapper Master P and stars in the Nickelodeon series "Romeo!"

Principal photography is set to begin in the San Francisco Bay area and New York City this summer.

The 6-foot-4 Simmons played basketball on a scholarship at Franklin Pierce College; other credits include "Taxi," "Are We There Yet?" and "Above the Rim."
