Valverde wed to 'Wives'

Actress starred in 'Melissa P.'

BARCELONA — Maria Valverde, who leapt to international attention playing the title role in Italian sex drama "Melissa P.," has been attached to Spanish Civil War romancer "The Anarchist's Wives."

One of Spain's only teen actresses with some overseas cache, Valverde, whose latest pic "Thieves" was a Malaga Fest standout, joins Juan Diego Botto ("Broken Silence"), Nina Hoss (Berlin fest best actress for "Yella"), Jean-Marc Barr ("Dogville") and Laura Morante ("The Son's Room").

Set in 1937 at the height of the Spanish Civil War, "Wives" turns on Justo (Botto), a lawyer-turned radio journo who fights for the Republican cause.

As the Republicans are routed, Justo disappears leaving his wife Manuela (Valverde) alone to bring up their children. She never loses hope of finding her husband.

Pic will be co-helmed by Peter Sehr ("Obsession," "Love the Hard Way") and Marie Noelle, a regular Sehr collaborator, who wrote the script with Ray Loriga.

According to Noelle, "The Anarchist's Wives" is not a history lesson but a love story, mixing lost hopes, exile, impossible relationships and rounded characters.

Budgeted at Euros 5 million ($6.7 million), "Wives" is produced by Sehr's P'Artisan Filmproduktion, Jean-Jacques Beineix's Cargo Films and Zip Films, headed by Norbert Llaras and Jordi Rediu.

TV rights have already been sold to European pubcasters such as Germany's ARD and Catalonia's TVC, as well as French-German TV operator Arte.

"Wives" rolls from early May.
