'Idol' down, but still dominant

Ratings Flash - Rick Kissell

As "American Idol" continues to under-perform versus last season's record-ratings level, the megahit and hot drama "House" carried Fox to another convincing victory in key demos on Tuesday night.

According to preliminary nationals from Nielsen, "American Idol" (roughly 10.1 rating/28 share in adults 18-49, 26.1 million viewers overall from 8 to 9:02 p.m.) destroyed the competish as usual but was down by double-digit percentages vs. the same night a year ago. It was pretty much a wash at the other major nets, though, with CBS' second-place "NCIS" (3.2/9 in 18-49, 13.7 million viewers overall) down slightly year-to-year, while NBC with "Dateline" (1.8/5 in 18-49, 5.7 million viewers overall) and ABC with repeats of "George Lopez" and "According to Jim" (combined 1.5/4 in 18-49, 4.5 million viewers overall for the hour) were both up a smidge vs. last year.

In the night's middle hour, Fox cruised again with "House" (roughly 8.8/22 in 18-49, 20.9 million viewers overall from 9:02 to 10:01 p.m.), well ahead of ABC's "Dancing With the Stars" results show (3.7/9 in 18-49, 14.7 million viewers overall). With the Alphabet tripling what it did on the same night a year ago, CBS drama "The Unit" (2.9/7 in 18-49, 9.9 million viewers overall) tumbled about 30% year-to-year but remained well ahead of drama rival "Law & Order: Criminal Intent" on NBC (2.2/6 in 18-49, 7.2 million viewers overall).

NBC won as usual at 10 o'clock with "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit" (3.9/11 in 18-49, 11.2 million viewers overall) but it was off by about 25% vs. an original episode on the same night a year ago. ABC's firstrun "Boston Legal" (2.7/7 in 18-49, 10.1 million viewers overall) and CBS' special repeat of "CSI: Miami" (2.5/7 in 18-49, 8.0 million viewers overall) were well behind the Peacock drama.

Preliminary 18-49 averages for the night: Fox, 9.4/25; CBS, 2.9/8; ABC, 2.6/7; NBC, 2.6/7; Univision, 1.7/4; CW, 0.9/2.

In total viewers: Fox, 23.3 million; CBS, 10.5 million; ABC, 9.7 million; NBC, 8.0 million; Univision, 3.8 million; CW, 2.2 million.
