Fearnet gets Raimi projects

'Devil's Trade' gets mobile Boost

"Spider-Man" guru Sam Raimi is aboard to produce the first two original series for Fearnet, the multiplatform horror/thriller site launched five months ago by Sony, Comcast and Lionsgate.

Both projects are moving ahead, with the first set to bow by early June. Raimi will produce via Ghost House Pictures, the joint venture he and Rob Tapert run with Mandate's Joe Drake and Nathan Kahane.

Fearnet prexy Diane Robina said each skein will run seven episodes, with storylines continuing week-to-week as on a sudser. Segs will be ad-supported and run between three and five minutes.

They'll be available on all Fearnet platforms: on-demand cable, streaming Internet video and mobile devices.

Up first from Raimi is "Devil's Trade," which follows three teenagers who find themselves cursed after buying an item off a Web site. Ben Ketai wrote the script and Toby Wilkins will direct.

Fearnet has struck an advertising deal for "Devil's Trade," working with Boost Mobile to integrate the cell-phone service into the production.

Second project, also penned by Ketai, will serve as a prequel to "30 Days of Night," the Ghost House- Columbia Pictures feature about vampires who feast on an isolated Alaskan town. Skein will debut in advance of the October release of the feature.

Robina said the Ghost House gang "are really passionate about the horror genre," making them the right choice for Fearnet's launch series.

Ghost House has experience in Web-based programming, producing online content connected to its features.

"We've seen the digital space grow exponentially in the last few years, and Fearnet presents us with another opportunity to expand our goal in providing original content to the horror community," Tapert said.

With its first two original productions in the works, Robina said Fearnet will continue to add programming throughout the year.

"I'd like to do four or five (projects) this year," she said, adding the net is in negotiations on another skein. And while shortform skeins will be the initial focus, Robina expects the net will get involved in co-producing a feature-length project sometime soon.
