Serkis to star in 'Cottage'

Pic is Williams' second feature

LONDON — Andy Serkis will star in "The Cottage," the second movie from writer/director Paul Andrew Williams, whose debut "London to Brighton" won several awards last year.

"The Cottage" is a black comedy horror pic set in the remote countryside, about two brothers who bungle the kidnapping of the daughter of a crime boss and then stumble across a dark rural secret.

Pic, which started shooting March 26, is being financed by the U.K. Film Council's Premiere Fund, the Isle of Man Film Commission, Screen York-shire and Pathe, which is taking U.K. rights and handling international sales. Cinetic Media is handling North America.

Serkis heads a cast that includes Reece Shearsmith ("The League of Gentlemen"), Jennifer Ellison (best known in Blighty for TV soap "Brookside") and Steve O'Donnell. Pic shoots in April.

Ken Marshall is producing for Steel Mill Pictures, with Martin Pope of Magic Light Pictures as exec producer.

"London to Brighton," which was shot on a shoestring but received completion coin from the UKFC's New Cinema Fund, won the Golden Hitchcock at Dinard, the new director award at Edinburgh, the Raindance Jury Prize and the British Independent Film Award for best achievement in production.

Williams was nominated in BAFTA's best British newcomer category.
